In our content management system site pages are made up of blocks of text called articles. In this tutorial we are going to create a new article and add it to a menu ie we are going to create a new web page. This is only the tip of the iceberg as far as the content management is concerned but it demonstrates how you can manage your site on a day to day basis to accommodate holidays, offers and news items. Of course what it also means is that if you need to ask the friendly guys at Leonmedia to do something for you it will take minimal time to produce. Which is good news for you.
1
We want to add a new special offer called 'free switch'. This is an offer we are running to allow you to switch from your current provider to take advantage of our competitive pricing. You can see the menu and offers we have so far (under 'special offers') - we are going to add the new offer to this menu.
2
Now login to the 'backend' of your site.
3
We have highlighted the content menu. This is where you edit articles (or your page text) and create new sections and categories. Go into article manager.
4
You can see on this screen a list of articles that have currently been created. Now click 'new' to create a new article.
5
Now you can enter your text in the editor. You can see in here we have added something called 'dropcap' - this is part of our typography layouts and is used to create a more aesthetically pleasing page with predefined styling. You need to add a page title and section and category (this category is 'special offers'). Click 'save' to save your new article. See our page on typography layout for more detail.
6
Now go to the 'main menu' from the menu at the top so that you can add your new article to the menu at the top of website.
7
In the menu screen you can see how the menus are built uo. The indented items are 'sub-menus'. Click 'new' to create a new menu item.
8
There are lots of types of menu items to choose from now. We are going to choose the basic choice of 'article layout'.
9
You are now in the 'article layout' menu page. From the right hand side click 'select' so that you can choose the article you want to add to your menu.
10
Select your article (we are choosing 'free switch') and select 'save'.
11
Now fill in the menu details. Add a title. Selecting a parent item allows this new menu item to be added as a sub-menu (clever eh?) - we are going to add it to our 'special offers' menu. Click 'save' when finished.
12
Now lets go back to the website and refresh the page. You can see our new menu has been added.
13
Now if we go into the top menu item 'special offers' you can also see our new article has also been automatically added in here. However, there is one thing we haven't done. The other 2 offers we have done have click through links or 'read more' links. These are really useful ways of putting snippets of information on the page so that the user can click through and read more about the subject. Now lets go back into the article and add a 'read more' link.
14
Back in the article view you notice there are some buttons at the bottom. Select where you want the 'read more' link to go (ie just before 'We have' and click the 'read more' button.
15
You will see a line now appears where you want the 'read more' link to go. Click 'save' and go back to the website.
16
Now refresh the page and you can see that our new 'free switch' page has a link to show the page in full
