Using google analytics

K2_WRITTEN_BY_MALE  administrator

This tutorial demonstrates some of the capabilities of the google analytics tool. We set up google analytics on your site as part of our standard fee. Google analytics is an extremely powerful tool that allows you to understand who is visiting your site, how many people are visiting your site, how they get to your site and what they do when they get there.

If you have already taken up one of our packages please see our page setting up your google analytics account. Don't forget - this is set up for you as part of our custom website package.

If you think your website is nothing more than an opportunity for people to find your address and phone number then our google analytics tools will light enough lightbulbs to make you think differently. Firstly, go to http://www.google.com/analytics and log in. Under view reports select your website in the dropdown. You will be presented with the main dashboard

The dashboard breaks down the key metrics for your website. We have blanked out any identifying data to protect anonymity. Note you can select time periods for data you wish to view. You then have details on visits to your site on a day to day basis and some site usage metrics. You then have sections for visitors overview, map overlay (showing where your site visitors are based), traffic overview and content overview. We can then drill down into these 4 sections to get some more detail. google analytics[/number]
[number color=purple value=2]The visitors overview gives you detail on the visitors to your site including what operating systems and browsers they are using. It also gives you some useful metrics such as 'unique' visitors (which is different to total visits), how long they spend on your site and how many pages they view. The bounce rate is a good metric as this is an indicator of how many visitors come to your site and leave straight away.google analytics[/number] [number color=purple value=3]The map overlay page gives you some more visitors metrics and tells you where your visitors are based. There are plenty of drill downs on this page to analyse your visitors further.google analytics[/number] [number color=purple value=4]The next report is the traffic sources overview. This is probably the most useful and allows you to see how visitors are finding your site - either by an organic search (as opposed to non-organic searches such as pay-per-click advertising) or by another source. You can immediately see in here the success of any mailing campaigns or facebook campaigns. It also shows keywords (ie the search engine search used) that have been used to find your site. We at Leonmedia can help you understand what these mean and help you maximise your sites productivity based on these results.google analytics[/number] [number color=purple value=5]The content overview report details pages your visitors have been viewing. This is a really useful page for targetting specific goals. For example it may be your visitors go straight to a page such as a timetable page - you can therefore target specific advertising on this page for example.google analytics[/number]

These reports are only the tip of the iceberg of the power of google analytics - you can see on each screenshots the extra menus items opening up down the left hand side and all the click through you have to dig deeper into your websites metrics.

We have lots of tips on getting yourself showing up in search engine listings. If you would like a chat feel free to drop us a line.
